The authors of this paper from The Center for Innovation & Transformation in Education, define deeper learning as "directly linked to college- and career-readiness. It achieves this by shifting the focus of education to one in which students: master core academic content; develop the ability to think critically and solve complex problems; work collaboratively; communicate effectively; and ;earn how to learn, such as through self-directed learning." With the aide of case studies, this paper outlines recommendations for state policymakers to consider in their effors to focus on 21st Century education goals. These recommendations include information about designing systems of assessment that integrate performance assessments to support deeper learning.
