The obesity problem in the United States if rising, resulting in higher risks of health- related diseases. Rising health-related diseases come with higher health costs. Obesity is considered an epidemic in the United States. To fight obesity, Mayor Bloomberg of New York City proposed a ban on the sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in the city. Is it the governments' job to regulate what people eat and drink to put an end to obesity in the United States?
This module was written to get students thinking about their health. They read the President's Council on Fitness: Elevate Health- Fitness, sports, nutrition. They will read informational texts with competing views about what can be done to help America with the obesity epidemic. Students will demonstrate reading and analyzing texts, annotating, vocabulary, speaking and listening skills, note- taking skills, and formulating a claim and writing an argumentative paper.This module will be taught at the beginning of the year so students will be taught the basic reading and writing skills needed for this class for the year. This module will take approximately four weeks to teach. Students taught in this class range in abilities.
